Technically this is a classic 5 tube radio, but because of the selenium rectifier, it's actually more like a 6 tube radio. There's an additional IF tube stage, and
it. makes. a. difference
: This radio pulls in so many stations. I also calibrated it of course.
Stromberg-Carlson made this radio just a hint nicer in another way too: the antenna on the back is built onto a phenolic board, not fiberboard. The copper wire is stamped into the phenolic, not clumsily wound. And the antenna terminals are quick-connect type. No soldering or de-soldering necessary. It's a small detail, but still nicer than the competition.
I re-capped this radio using hi voltage Panasonic film capacitors. These are reputed for sound quality and longevity. In 30 years of using them, never has one failed on me.
I needed to replace one tube. The others were good.
This radio is missing the cosmetic plastic lens that covers the dial. It's also missing the dial pointer. It has been repainted. The paint is good quality and well sprayed, though a little thin in some areas, and there are a couple scratches visible. It's still satisfying to look at. It takes a close inspection to notice the flaws. Bakelite is not chipped nor cracked.
This is a 2-piece bakelite radio and it will be carefully packed.
