    Description

Years ago I was invited into an old house in western Maine to look at something else, and noticed this cool old radio sitting on a high shelf in a closet. I asked if I could take it down to take a closer look, and as soon I did I knew I wanted it. I dug the cool mid-century lines and that great original 1950’s industrial green paint on the plastic case, but what really drew me was its big, beautiful dial, with that great illustrated Special Services band that harkens you back to the Cold War era of duck & cover drills and exclamations like “neato” and “peachy keen!” This is a 1954 Philco model B574, one of the sets Philco in the heady era after they abandoned their old model-numbering system and before they started to get out of the business entirely.
I doubt Philco made very many of them, because I have only seen one or two others, and none in this wonderful color. The set’s plastic case, which measures 12”w x 6”h x 6”d, has no cracks or chips, has a few scuffs on the top which I have left as-is because I don’t want to risk removing that super-cool “Philco tube-saver” label, the only one I have ever seen. This set has since been meticulously restored electronically, and works and sounds as good as the day it left the factory. I have enjoyed this set for many years, but now I’m running out of space, so it’s time to pass it along to another discerning collector who will appreciate and enjoy it for years to come as I have. If you’ve always wanted one of these neato sets but were waiting to find one that was truly peachy keen, this is your lucky day; you might not come across another like it til the 2050’s. Best of all, I am offering it here with NO RESERVE – high bidder takes it!
I will ship this item ONLY within the United States. If you live elsewhere and are interested in it, please contact me BEFORE bidding so we can discuss the shipping charges, which can be very expensive outside the U.S. I ship once a week (whenever possible). Having received, over the years, some items that did not survive shipping, I always take care to pack very carefully. If you prefer, I will be happy to drop it off at a nearby UPS store and have it professionally packed and shipped at your expense. I reserve the right to raise or lower the shipping charges should they prove to be significantly different than those determined by the shipping calculator. I reserve the right to refuse sale to anyone with excessive negative feedback or an otherwise suspicious history. Payment is due within three (3) days of the auction's close. Due to its age I am selling this item without any warranty. All sales are final. I am not a dealer, and don’t have a big operation with a staff, so I would appreciate your patience while I take the time to pack your items with the care they deserve.
Be sure to see all the pictures! I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, but please try to ask as early as possible, as it sometimes takes me a while to get to my email. Please see my other listings, as I am running out of space and am thinning out my collection considerably. I have several fine items up on Ebay right now, and will be listing many more in the weeks and months to come, so please keep checking. Good luck and happy bidding!
