    Cuauhtémoc was the Aztec ruler of Tenochtitlan from 1520 to 1521, making him the last Aztec Emperor.
    Many modern Mexicans consider Cuauhtémoc to be a great hero. In general, Mexicans view the conquest as a bloody, unprovoked invasion by the Spanish driven mostly by greed and misplaced missionary zeal. Cuauhtémoc, who fought the Spanish to the best of his ability, is considered a hero who defended his homeland from these rapacious invaders. Today, there are towns and streets named for him, as well as a majestic statue of him at the intersection of Insurgentes and Reforma, two of the most important avenues in Mexico City.
