Siemens wanted a fancy design for its top-of-the-range radios, they should be clearly different from the radios that were common in the 1930s. In 1934 the first radio with doors was created and named it Schatulle. With the closed doors the radio looks like a bar cabinet. The special design and the noble surface were very elegant and an eye catcher. Scale lamps are switched off,  controls, dial-glass and loudspeakers became invisible. By 1941, 18 models Siemens Schatulle had been launched on the market.
In 1953 a new design for the Schatulle series was developed. The rectangular shape and the materials used corresponded more to the taste of the 50s. The model in 1954 names were Schatulle P48, H42, M47, H52 and M57.
The H42 box is equipped with 7 tubes and two broadband speakers and a passive mid-range / tweeter horn. A special feature is the so-called local station button for FM. This button can be used to program the preferred local station.
Some short informations about each of my radio restorations. A tube radio and the components it uses are usually 50 or more years old. Therefore, controls and replacement of components are urgently necessary to ensure reliable function. Also i
t is very important to me that the radio retains its character. It is old and should look old in the future as well, so I am restoring the cabinet very gently and as little as possible, so that the grown patina should be preserved.
In order to meet today's listening habits, the radio can be connected to your smartphone. A pluggable Bluetooth receiver is supplied for connection to a smartphone. It is not necessary to intervene in the radio. The external Bluetooth receiver is simply connected to the turntable socket using the adapter cable.

Careful restoration is of the utmost importance for the proper functioning of this wonderful radio. The Schatulle H42 should bring you full performance also in the future, it works in quality, as shown in the YouTube videos. The radio has antennas that allow you to receive stations on FM and AM. However, good outdoor antennas offer better reception. Please note that the radio uses old analogue technology, it was developed for the European market nearly 70 years ago. A comparison with today's digital technology is hardly possible.
This radio is pure nostalgia and you will love it because it has the charm of the past.
A few words about components, specially capacitors: they are always "time bombs" in old devices. These components have changed tremendously due to their age and design. The cause is very often the type of storage. Radios, which are particularly offered on sales platforms or flea markets, have often been stored for decades in attics, garages, barns, basements and other places. As a result, they are subject to permanent temperature change, the environment was too dry, hot, moist, wet, humid. If the capacitors dry out or moisture penetrates them, the capacitance values change drastically, which can lead to short circuits.
For these reasons, I basically replace all of these components on the radio. If these parts are replaced, the sources of error are eliminated. However, due to its age, it is possible that some components are no longer available. In these cases I use parts from identical or similar models during a restoration. This is necessary to ensure the functionality and safety of a radio.
Something about me. In a company steeped in tradition, I enjoyed learning to repair radios and televisions. My apprenticeship as a craftsman began in 1967. The picture shows my master craftsman's certificate from 1977, at which time tube technology was at its peak. Over the past 50 years I have been able to professionally repair a few thousand models for my customers. Radio technology has always fascinated me and I started collecting radios. But everything has its time, now I'm dissolving my collection. I hope that these wonderful testimonies of past technology will find their joy that will give them a future. I am happy to answer your questions about tube radios, please write me to my address.
